Sculpture Art: Guardians of Abastan

by Olga Grechanova
filmed by Rita Rahimi and Olga Grechanova
This series was made during a three-week residency program in the art commune of Abastan. Abastan is a community of artists located in an abandoned textile factory in a small Armenian town in the mountains. This space reinforced my apocalyptic vision of the world and inspired me to create sculptures that ask questions "What will humanity leave behind? And what will this look like to an outside viewer?" Being in a factory where machines, cutting tables, and patterns still remained, I felt like such an observer.
Simultaneously with my stay in Armenia, Azerbaijan began shelling Nagorno-Karabakh with artillery. And under these circumstances, I had a strong need for images of guardians and protectors.
Now these sculptures stand to the left and right of the main entrance to the factory and each is responsible for its own half of the building. I hope they can handle it.
